Here are 8 ways to make Twitter a more useful marketing channel for you and your company and get more followers.
- Use Hashtags: This seems like a pretty obvious one but it must be noted. I saw significant increases in engagement when high performing hashtags were used. Use them every chance you get and research the hashtags before to ensure you’re using the best one. - Tag people/brands: My engagement went up by 40-50% when I tagged either someone who may have interest in the content I was sharing, a person in the content, or a brand that was responsible for the content. I once tagged Buffer in a tweet and an article. One week later, a handwritten thank you note and some Buffer bumper stickers showed up at my house. - Use Images: Seems like another pretty obvious one but get this: On my last 30 posts, posts with images were averaging over 100% better engagement rate than posts without images. This is simply a no brainer. - Get personal – People want to see inside your life: It is no surprise that one of the hottest app crazes right now revolves around selfies. Your Twitter followers, much like your Facebook friends or Google+ followers, want to see inside your life. US Weekly and Perez Hilton have two of the most popular sites in the world because they chronicle the behind-the-scenes happenings of famous people. We, the consuming public, cannot get enough of it. Similarly, your followers, some of whom are avid fans, want to see what’s going on inside your life. Get personal. Share where you are and what you are doing and see your engagement rates rise. #ItsAllAboutYou
- Don’t send inspirational quotes: I have recently experimented with sending out inspirational quotes. Yeah…um….I got crickets. I am not trying to be a hypocrite by saying I will never send another one (especially since some are truly influential on my life), but I am saying I will be cutting back on them. The last ten inspirational quotes I have sent have seen my lowest impression rates and a…wait for it… zero engagement rate. No retweets, no favorites. No nada. - Value Posts work: When I say “value posts”, I mean links that add value to people’s lives. Examples: 10 Ways to Make Money on the Internet, 7 Things to Store in Your House in Case of a Snowstorm, 4 Rock Solid Ways to Negotiate a Higher Salary. Posts that contain inherent value see higher engagement. My rule of thumb: “Scratch my itch.” I tend to post links and stories that add value to my life thinking my followers are primarily made up of people like me who have similar careers. These posts, on average, get a 1-2% bump in engagement on Twitter. #ValueIsValuable
- Lists baby, lists: Posts with lists are magic. People like lists. Lists are easy to understand, and furthermore, they use a common marketing and copywriting principle for understanding information. They keep the information short, simple and easy to digest. Next time you write a blog post or article, try to look a level deeper and see if that post could be broken up into a numbered list. This will help readers read the post more easily and make your headline or subject line way more effective. #ListsListsBaby
- How to: The two most powerful headlines that I have used either start with numbers (above) or “How to.” Your followers not only want to see inside your life, they want to know how to do what you do. I had a friend recently test this theory on a YouTube clip. Sure enough when he changed “Installing WordPress site on _______ Hosting” to “How to install your WordPress site on ______ Hosting,” his views increased 300% overnight and continue on an upward trend. As one of my favorite authors, Nathan Barry, likes to say, “TEACH!” Teach people what you know and preface that lesson with “How to” for maximum content effectiveness. #HowToGetYourselfTrending
